"No transaction is in progress" after migrating to Wildfly

We have a Spring 3.6 application with Hibernate 4.2.2 which was working fine on glassfish 4, until we migrated to Wildfly 8.2. We use Spring-data 1.5.0.

The following two problems appear:

1. 
   

   When saving an entity, it's not persisted. No exception is thrown here, but the save method in org.springframework.data.jpa.repository.support.SimpleJpaRepository returns an entity with no ID assigned

   
   


2. 
   

   When updating (merging) an entity, flush throws an exception: javax.persistence.TransactionRequiredException: no transaction is in progress

As mentioned, the app worked fine on Glassfish. To get to this point we had to exclude some modules from Wildfly, specifically org.jboss.resteasy.resteasy-jackson2-provider to get JSON serialization working. We don't use provided dependencies, so it's possible we have some conflicts with provided Wildfly modules. We have extensive JUnit coverage and all tests pass, so it's likely this has something to do with the modules provided by Wildfly.

We also had to change the following in persistence.xml:
